ATRS Midget Series

Northside’s Brock Dean in the 99Q DTR Mechanical/True Powder Coating King Hawk finally broke the streak of bridesmaid finishes to take round three in the ATRS Midget Series after grabbing the lead off Darren Vine with less than a handful of laps left in the main event this past Saturday night.

Round two winner Rusty Whittaker clocked the nights GSA Fastman Award at 13.475 and would see him highest points scorer after the 4 heat races in the 89Q Steelmart Sunshine Coast/Specialised Energy BOSS Esslinger.

Cal Whatmore JNR was back on all 4 cylinders this show in the Rodney Singleton Racing/Speedy Air Conditioning Spike Esslinger 3Q claiming the line honors of the first heat ahead of the returning ”Beenleigh Bullet” which is in fact the Spike Mopar 11Q of Charlie Brown and Tom Clauss in his TPC Earthmoving 45Q Eagle.

Heat one was a bit scrappy and as a result of damages from battle we unfortunately lost the cars of Brad Dawson and Glenn Wright for the night.

Heat two saw Rusty Whittaker weave his through the 9 car field to the lead with the 18Q Breka Esslinger of Nathan Mathers and Zac McDonald’s Johnny Mc Towing Spike Hawk 23Q in tow crossing the 10 lapper in that order.

Brock Dean took the victory in heat race three on the nights programme ahead of Whittaker and Whatmore JNR incidentally the car back in 6th bagged the quickest actual speed at 94.924kph and that was Mitchell Rooke in the RJR Kitchens Spike Esslinger 34Q.

Darren Vine rounded out the nights heats taking the victory in the shortened event (down from 10 to 8 laps) ahead of the Beenleigh Bullet and Ricky “Bobby” Robinson in the 56Q Benkel Machinery/Watty’s Fabrication Breka Gaerte.

From the get go Darren Vine in the P2 position had a blinder of a start pulling car lengths at the green as Whittaker ducked back down underneath the King Car Brown, Dean and Chaffey all fought for real estate ownership coming off turn two it was now the likes of McDonald, O’Neil, Rooke were all on the scene at race pace, Vine had a moment off turn four which bunched the field up shuffling a couple forward and one back.

“The Wiley Fox” Anthony Chaffey was now on the tail of the Vine and Dean freight train in his RidgeTrans BOSS Chev 25Q

Zac McDonald gave the top shelf a go in the 23Q as Whittaker fought back to the lead pack after being burying it was now a gaggle of cars for 3rd as Chaffey, McDonald , Whittaker and Rooke fought hammer and tongs in the meantime Dean and Vine set sail.

McDonald’s car came to a slow pace and eventually brought on the yellows which bunched up the field and gave everyone a chance to breathe.

On the restart with 22 to go it was a pair of Kings leading a pair of Bosses it appeared Charlie Browns run was coming to an end after dropping a ton of pace and places with what was now evident to be a flat left rear tire.

Both Vine and Dean hit the lower line as Whittaker went up the top to eventually round out Chaffey Rooke hung in with the duo of Chaffey and Whittaker however Nathan Mathers was now in the party as well was Matt O’Neil.

As the laps counted down and going green for a decent stint the front cars caught lapped traffic as Dean decided it was time to pounce and rounded the 6Q coming off turn two and lead the field home in the 99Q King Hawk.

Absolute blinder of a run by Brock Dean to break his streak of 2nds for the season, the Bob Baker Challenge was drawn however as Anthony Chaffey wasn’t at the previous round the $500 cash goes back into Bob’s pocket and onto Toowoomba!

Notable mentions would have to go to The Chaff though putting on a show and a blinder in the feature with Rusty running up high, Matt O Neil took out the ATRS Lucky 7TH place voucher running racers on all four corners he now has a $100 voucher with his name on it.

That’s round 3 in the ATRS Archerfield Midget Series done , run and won so from here we move on back to the Highbanks of the Toowoomba Speedway on December the 5th for round two in the Nexgen Hire/NuPave Asphalt Services Highbank Hussle

Sunshine Coaster Rusty Whittaker stormed to a round win in the recent American Tire and Racing Services Archerfield Midget Series in the Steelmart Sunny Coast/RAW Metal Corp BOSS Esslinger 89Q

Whittaker clocked the nights GSA Fastman in the hot lap session with a 14.702 just ahead of what would be actual feature race top three in order and that was Brock Dean and Darren Vine (Dean 14.913 and Vine 14.950).

Scotty Doyle’s night came to a fiery end in the hot lap stint with his 80Q Ti Bolts and Race Parts Esslinger bursting into flames coming off turn 4 he had just clocked a 16.552 before coming to a halt and ejecting from the flames leaving the crash crew to extinguish the heat and the night the Doyle’s.

A fuel line fitting found to be the culprit and the boys will set about returning for the next round.

The Smith Brothers Racing Pilot Bodie Smith took line honours in the first 10 lapper heat of the night in their ED Pink Spike 77Q after a “ding dong” battle with firstly the Troy Ware Constructions Mopar Bullet by Spike of Troy Ware and Brock Deans DTR King Hawk , Ware and Dean swapped placings at the final flag ahead of the 46Q Aggressor of Chris Singleton in fourth, Audie Malt’s Spike Gaerte crossed in fifth from Mitchel Rooke in the 34Q, Matt O’Neil in seventh as Graeme Flynn in the 82Q King Gaerte rounded out the field.

The Rusty Whittaker and Darren Vine battle went into over drive in the night’s second heat race after Whittaker with the 89Q lead a majority of the distance Viney had the 6Q King SR11 full steam and on a charge it was with 4 laps down when Barry Gibbes in his 66Q Spike Gaerte departed for the night upending in turn one which closed the gap Whittaker had on the field, on the restart Vine kept the pressure on railing the MVT/Craig Thompson Machining King around the outside of Whittaker off turn four taking the lead and it wasn’t until the last two turns where Whittaker ducked 89 BOSS up the inside of Vine for the lead to the flag in front of Vine, Nathan Mathers 18Q Breka Esslinger, Glenn Wrights 41W was next over the line in fourth from The GSA Bandit, Tom Clauss in the 45Q Eagle and Gavin McDowell in seventh.

Troy Ware was on an absolute flyer in the third heat of the night smacking out a 106.163 kph best speed as he took the field to the chequered head of another strong run from the pairing of Dean and Smith, Matt O’Neil put in another solid session of laps with a fourth in the 16Q Breka Porsche from Audie Malt and Tom Clauss, DNF’s were recorded for the 82Q of Graeme Flynn and after leading for the opening lap Chris Singleton retired with a very ill sounding Eagle 46Q.

The APC/DRE Breka Esslinger of Glenn Wright took out the fourth and final heat on the programme for the Midgets leading home Vine and Whittaker from Nathan Mathers, Brad Dawson and Gavin McDowell as Cal Whatmore JNR recorded a second DNF of the night at this stage.

The feature main event was on for young and old at the drop of the green as Whittaker and Ware filled the front row it was only with a minor over cook off turn four from Ware that gave the hard charging field a chance to swoop spots and swoop they did shuffling the 71 race back to fourth, with five on the board the 16Q O’Neil car looped in turn four as Bodie Smith and Ware arrived on scene with nowhere to go the pair collided as a luckless Chris Singleton banged the fence and upending the 46Q Nexgen Hire car in the same spot.

O’Neil and Smith were refired as the Ware and Singleton cars headed infield, Smith would join the pairing with what appeared to be front end damage, Graeme Flynn also parked the 82Q infield with a deflated rear tyre as we now had the 3Q Whatmore JNR and 45Q Claus cars also on the grass.

After a few yellow flags came out before the end the restarts proved to be a very strong point for the 89Q Whittaker car and with car speed to match he continued to set sail as Vine was now barking on the back of the 99 machine the nights top three in the time trials would cross in this order at the black and white Mitchell Rooke ran home in fourth ahead of a super steer from Audie Malt and car 5 ran fifth , Matt O’Neil in 6th and the Bandit Brad Dawson in the ATRS Lucky 7th (Running American Racers all round he picks up the $100 voucher !) Glenn Wright banked eighth place points from Nathan Mathers and Gavin McDowell made the cash cut in tenth.

As mentioned Brad “The Bandit” Dawson took out the American Tire and Racing Services Lucky 7th place voucher with racers on all four corners and the extremely unlucky Cal Whatmore JNR who struggled to run more than 3 laps due to a mechanical gremlin picked up the Bob Baker Challenge $500 cash !

Notable mentions for Audie Malt running some consecutively fast laps and to a 5th place in the main event as well as Gavin McDowell recording a top ten finish and Mitchell Rooke who’s always looming near the pointy end !

Our next ATRS Midget Series round will be this month on the 16th so lock in the date and catch you trackside !

Have you ever wondered what’s in the numbers?

Let’s take a look at hot laps and there’s some interesting times from the Nupave/Nexgen Quicktime 18/19 season

Now we all remember Adam Clarke blasting to the current one lap record with a 12.866 back on the 18th of May way back in 2013 ….. Seems so long ago!

He again laid down an impressive time in the opening round last season with a 14.709 pipping Rusty Whittaker on 14.873 and Darren Vine in the IBRP 35Q who locked in a 14.886

Round two of the same season a little later in October it was Rusty Whittaker clocking 13.374 the first of the “13’s” which would turn out to be one of the only two in the season and set by Whittaker in the 89Q car.

Whittaker backed up his QuickTime stanza in round three with a 14.170 leading the time charts over a huge 19 car field with just over 2 seconds from 1st to 19th …… everyone was very close!

Round four on the 8th of December saw Rusty Whittaker complete the hat trick of QuickTime’s with a 15.100 ahead of Charlie Brown and Tim Farrell.

Darren Vine edged out Adam Clarke on boxing night in round five of 2018 clocking a 14.071 to Clarkies 14.203 and Rusty Whittaker’s 14.312.

Viney in the 6Q again topped the timing monitors on a super heavy track early January 2019 with a 15.892 ahead of a season best time for Glenn Wright banking a 16.146 and Bodie Smith at 16.271

Tim “The Hitman” Farrell locked in a 15.457 on the 26th of January in the 51Q ahead of another season PB from Tom Clauss in with a 15.536 to Rusty Whittaker in 3rd at 15.965

Rusty then took the line honours in the only February show at Archerfield leading a huge 21 car field with a 15.517 from Brock Dean’s 15.545 and Vine on a 15.580

The 9th of March saw the 35Q Callum Walker rein clocking a 14.024 ahead of Scotty Farmer in the 22Q who ran a 14.058 and Vine’s 14.118

Walker then backed up another QuickTime on the 6th of April again in the IBRP 35Q at 14.944 literally a fraction in front of Brad Harrison’s 14.947 and Farmers 15.255

Change of numbers, same result saw Rusty Whittaker now in the re-numbered BOSS car which now carried the 78Q digits topping the 18 car ladder with the seasons only other “13” at 13.650 over Farmer at 13.703 and Sydney-Sider Kaidon Brown at 13.729.

Farmer took out the season ending QuickTime of our 18/19 season with a 14.811 from Brock Dean at 14.939 and Zac MacDonald banked his season best at 14.946 in the Seasons Hot lap Sessions.

11 rounds plus the 50 lapper we invaded the “13’s” only twice!
We topped the ladder by hitting the “14’s” six times and ventured into the “15’s” just four times to take the nights “QuickTime” Title

In the 19/20 season GSA Fastman Award came on board, the hot lap session had been moved to after the Sprintcars, the biggest field we have ever had on opening night in over a decade with 19 entries and it was Kaidon Brown already giving the lap record a nudge by laying down a 13.289 from Brock Dean 13.339 and Viney again showing a ton of pace with a 13.444.

Clarke 14.709
Whittaker 13.374
Whittaker 14.170
Whittaker 15.100
Vine 14.071
Vine 15.892
Farrell 15.457
Whittaker 15.517
Walker 14.024
Walker 14.944
Whittaker 13.650
Farmer 14.811

Brown 13.289
